Academy Report: Bristol Rovers U18's 2-1 Plymouth Argyle U18's

10 September 2018

The U18's came from behind on Saturday afternoon to defeat Plymouth Argyle.

An early penalty meant Rovers were a goal down heading into the half time break.

A strike from Isiah Crawford levelled the game up midway through the final forty-five minutes, as there was late drama to come, as Harry Warwick dispatched a late penalty to register the victory for the young Rovers side.

Speaking after the game, Lead professional Development coach, Tom Parrinello, signalled he was pleased with the second half response from the U18's.

"Plymouth started quickly and on the front foot and moved the ball around well. We started poorly and lacked real tempo to our play both in and out of possession," said Parrinello.

"We were a bit standoff-ish in our pressing and too rash with the ball to really get a foothold in the game. Despite the lacklustre first half performance we fashioned some decent openings in that first period and went in deservedly a goal down.

"We had a good chat at half time and addressed the boys that everything needed to improve but none more so than the basics of winning the ball back and then keeping it! We changed shape and immediately the boys came out second half a different animal.

"The tempo and intensity to what we did was terrific and a perfect reaction to some stern words at half time.

"The boys showed fantastic character and resilience to keep plugging away at the Plymouth goal and without fashioning masses of chances we created some really clear cut ones. We finally got a deserved equaliser when a quick counter attack ended with Isaiah Crawford tapping in Harry Warwick’s cross at the far post.

"Not happy with a point the boys went for the winner and managed to get it when Zain Walker was fouled inside the box and Warwick tucked away the resulting penalty.

"A fantastic second half performance, where the players showed good mental strength to respond to a poor first half and a half time rocket from the staff.

"Lots of positives to take including some excellent individual performances not just from the starting 11, but the subs as well who when they came on had a real positive impact on the game which is great for us to see."
