PRE-SEASON WIN FOR YOUNGSTERS

Posted on: Fri 16 Jul 2010

Rovers' youngsters got their pre-season off to a winning start beating Birmingham City 5-1 at the club's Wast Hills training ground.

The goals were shared out, with Robbi Maggs, Jordan Goddard, James Dale, Mitch Harding and Ellis Harrison all getting on the score sheet.

It was the first time the new youth team coach Jerry Gill has seen the lads in a competitive fixture and he was pleased with the performance and fitness levels.

He told bristolrovers.co.uk: "For the first outing, which was still a training exercise, it was an excellent performance.

"Fitness levels were very good, and it was encouraging how the players passed and moved the ball and showed good signs of playing attractive but decisive football.

"During pre-season we have been doing a lot of football aerobic sessions, which are worked on morning and afternoon, and all the lads have been through stringent fitness tests.

"In the game it showed that as well as working hard, the lads have also been looking after themselves away from the training ground."

All although Jerry was pleased with the performance, he recognises that there is still plenty of work to be done.

He said: "Whilst I have been encouraged by what I have seen, there is still plenty to work on in developing the group, both individually and collectively."

Team: Sam Butler, Alex Hoyle, Ashley Bowle, Tom Seery, Jordan Tilson, James Dale (Tyrone Rhoden), Jack Camm (Lamar Powell), Jordan Goddard (Mitch Harding), Lewis Parker (Ross Staley), Darren Jefferies, Robbi Maggs (Ellis Harrison).
