CHAIRMAN'S REPORT

Posted on: Wed 07 Apr 2010

It has been a disappointing few days for Bristol Rovers, losing out in the transfer market at the last minute was coupled with the unacceptable performances against Wycombe and Leyton Orient.

Despite all the work and phone calls made last week, we were unable to secure any of our targets, finally losing out on a player at the last minute on Monday, which was a huge blow to us, but I would like to assure you that as a board we do not lack ambition.

Money has been spent to secure the future of our promising young players, and considerable efforts have been made to try and bring a new striker to the club.

We are currently operating with the highest wage bill the club has ever had., and that makes the recent poor performances even more difficult to accept. We cannot have players at this club who do not want to play for Bristol Rovers, something needs to be done, and quickly.

We need to improve our squad and bring in new players if we stand any chance of salvaging anything from this season. I will continue to back the management team and make money available for them to strengthen.

There has been a lot of speculation surrounding the finances of the club, but I would like to reiterate what has been said many times already - there has been and still is money available for the management team to strengthen their squad.

People often ask what has happened to the money from the sale of Rickie Lambert, so I want to set the record straight.

Obviously some of this has had to be used for the increased wage bill we have following the agreements of new contracts with Chris Lines, Jo Kuffour, Byron Anthony and Ben Swallow and then there were the transfer fees and wages for Mark Wright. All of these transfers and negotiations have also incurred agent's fees.

But that is not to say all the money has been swallowed up - there is still money there that has been made available to Paul and Lennie.

I am also well aware that people feel they have heard very little from the club over the last few months in respect of the stadium project, but I can assure you that we have been progressing - albeit at a slow pace.

We are continuing to develop the financial model for the stadium, and we are pleased that we now have more than one funding option. However, the financial market has not eased, and we are currently unable to bring this to an acceptable conclusion to all parties.

We hope to have more positive news for you in due course, as we all realise that a new stadium is vital to the future sustainability of the club, as the current operating losses cannot continue for ever.

I know a lot of you feel let down at the moment, and after the last few performances, I cannot say I blame you. I am a fan and have felt embarrassed by the last two games, which do not reflect the ethos of our football club.

But we should not lose sight of the fact that we are still 9th in the table, and a few weeks ago we put in a good solid performance against Huddersfield, and before that we recorded a comprehensive win against Swindon - one of the in form teams in League One.

With some hard work and the right additions, there is no reason why we cannot get back to that sort of form.

As a club we need to make sure that we make good use of the emergency loan window. As fans as well as Directors we have this club's best interests at heart, and will do what we can to move it forward.
