Central defender James was another player signed by Rovers boss Paul Trollope in the summer of 2010, arriving on a season long loan from Brighton & Hove Albion.
He graduated through the youth system at Stockport County and made his first team debut in a 2-0 defeat against Notts County in 2005 when only 16.
He spent time on loan with Northwich Victoria in 2007 and signed for Brighton for a fee believed to be in the region of £150,000, after appearing in 41 league games for Stockport.
There were 19 league appearances for the Seagulls last season, before a loan spell with MK Dons which yielded another 10 league appearances.
He played for Brighton against Rovers at the Memorial Stadium last season, scoring their goal in a 1-1 draw.
