Bristol Rovers got back to winning ways at the Memorial Stadium this evening with a quality performance in front of the Sky cameras.

Rovers won the game 2-1 thanks to a goal in either half from Steve Elliott and Paul Heffernan, with Therry Racon pulling a goal back for Charlton deep into injury time.

There were three changes to the side that lost to Walsall here last week, but as a team they were unrecognisable, putting in a performance full of attacking flair and impressive link play.

Loan signing Daniel Jones went straight into the side at left back and Danny Coles and leading goal scorer Chris Lines both returned to the starting line up after recovering from injuries.

Mark Wright and Andy Williams dropped to the bench, while Wayne Brown was sidelined with an ankle ligament injury.

It was an thoroughly entertaining encounter, but the game was marred by a number of injuries which saw four players forced from the field - with Charlton's Grant Basey and Rovers' Chris Lines carried off on stretchers.

The first half was full of incident and excitement but there was an early stoppage after Dominic Blizzard went in late on Grant Basey, who eventually left the field on a stretcher with a suspected broken leg. The resulting free kick was easily saved by Mikkel Andersen in the Rovers goal.

Rovers responded well to that early delay and began to impose themselves on the game, earning a succession of corners, before Steve Elliott put them ahead just before the 15 minute mark.

Stuart Campbell's corner found the head of Heffernan, who rose weel to flick the ball into the path of Elliott. The big defender smashed home a volley past Charlton keeper Rob Elliott.

Rovers were also forced to make an early change after Jo Kuffour was forced off after a knock to be replaced by Andy Williams.

Charlton skipper Nicky Bailey tried to get his team back into the game, but his low shot through a crowded penalty box was easily gathered by Andersen.

Rovers then had a brilliant opportunity to double their lead, when Andy Williams was left one on one with the Charlton keeper. The striker should have done better, but he shot straight at Elliott who blocked the attempt.

Seconds later Chris Lines had two chances to extend Rovers lead. Firstly a powerful 20 yard shot was tipped over the bar by Elliott, before his 25 yard free kick was prevented from going into the top corner thanks to a good full stretch save from the Charlton keeper.

Rovers may have been dominating the game, but Charlton had their share of chances too, goal scorer Elliott had to be on hand to block a shot from Akpo Sodje, before the Charlton striker sent a free header glancing across the face of goal.

Then it was Paul Heffernan's turn to have a few chances in front of goal. Jeff Hughes crossed the ball to the loan striker, who forced Elliott into a reaction save.

Then Stuart Campbell sent Heffernan through on goal, only for the Irishman to beat the keeper and see his shot blocked off the line by Sam Sodje.

Chris Lines then had a long range shot fly just wide of the upright in injury time, and there was still time for Heffernan to have one more go - a Williams cross found the striker, who chested the ball down but sent his shot high and wide.

The second half began as the first had finished with Rovers on the attack and Heffernan testing the Charlton keeper.

Williams was then brought down out on the left, and Lines' free kick flew past the right hand post.

Andersen was then forced to produce a great one handed save at the other end after Lloyd Sam let fire with a fierce shot.

Then Rovers took the chance to extend their lead, and it was only fair that the goal went to dangerman Heffernan. The lively striker found himself on the end of a good flick on from Lines, headed the ball down and with only the keeper to beat slotted home his first Rovers goal.

Andersen did well to collect a shot from Therry Racon, but then Rovers saw the impressive Lines stretchered off to be replaced by Aaron Lescott.

Charlton were reduced to 10 men towards the end of the game after a clash of heads when they had already used all their substitutes.

Charlton managed a consolation goal deep into injury time thanks to a powerful shot from Racon, but it was too little too late, and Rovers held on to secure a well deserved three points.
