Bristol Rovers picked up their first home League win of the season, beating Huddersfield Town 1-0 at the Memorial Stadium this afternoon.

Jeff Hughes scored the only goal of the game from the penalty spot deep into the second half, to make it four wins on the trot for Rovers.

Both sides created chances and passed the ball well in the first half, with Darryl Duffy missing the chance to put Rovers ahead - again from the penalty spot.

The second half saw Huddersfield really take the game to Rovers, but the home side weathered the storm and took all three points after a fiery final 30 minutes.

Paul Trollope made no changes to today's team, keeping his faith with the side that picked up back to back away wins against Stockport and Hartlepool.

Steve Elliott returned from injury to take a place on the bench, replacing Sean Rigg who has gone out on loan to Forest Green Rovers.

It was a lively start for Rovers, and their first chance came with less than 10 minutes on the clock. Jo Kuffour got hold of the ball in midfield and set up Darryl Duffy whose low shot was blocked by a Huddersfield defender.

Rovers missed a chance to go ahead after 18 minutes, when Darryl Duffy's penalty attempt was saved by keeper Alex Smithies.

Kuffour picked up the ball in his own half and made a good run, before passing the ball through to Chris Lines. Lines made a run into the penalty box but was brought down by Smithies who came off his line and dived for the ball.

Duffy stepped up to the spot, but the keeper managed to guess right and save his right sided attempt.

Huddersfield tried to open the scoring when Gary Roberts lofted a ball into the box, but Byron Anthony got up well to head the ball clear.

Rovers then enjoyed a good spell of pressure, with Jo Kuffour and David Pipe linking up well down the right hand side.

Just before half time Kuffour nearly got his name on the score sheet after a neat ball through from Campbell. The little striker let fly with a left footed shot, which produced a diving save from Smithies.

Fraser Forster produced a vital save on the stroke of half time, as Huddersfield tried to get their nose in front.

Huddersfield made a substitution at half time, with striker Theo Robinson on for Anthony Kay to try and add something to Huddersfield's attack.

The visitors started brightly in the second half and spent the first 20 minutes camped around Rovers' penalty box.

Good work from Huddersfield in midfield found Jordan Rhodes with the ball at his feet, but he was unable to make it count, and the ball drifted harmlessly wide.

It was then Rovers turn to attack when the dangerous Kuffour gave the ball to Hughes, who made a good run down the left before putting the ball into the box for Duffy.

Duffy was unable to control the ball, and failed to get his shot away.

Huddersfield continued to pile on the pressure with Anthony Pilkington heading over the bar after a good cross from Gary Roberts.

Roberts then made a vital block down at the other end, clearing a Byron Anthony header off the line.

Andy Williams came on in the 78th minute to replace Duffy and bring some fresh legs on for Rovers.

Rovers felt they should have had a penalty in the 72nd minute after a fine shot from Lines led to a goal mouth scramble, where the ball was obstructed by a Huddersfield player.

Jeff Hughes and Danny Coles were both booked after a scuffle broke out in the penalty box. After the incident, the game remained quite heated, with incidents flaring up across the pitch.

Rovers had weathered the spell of pressure and were given another chance to take the lead from the penalty spot thanks to a hand ball from Huddersfield's Andy Butler.

With Duffy off the field, Jeff Hughes stepped up to the spot, and made no mistakes as he fired home a fierce shot into the top left hand corner.

This game was being billed as Rovers' first big test, and they came through it well. The Pirates now sit fourth in the table heading into Wednesday nights' Carling Cup second round clash with Cardiff.
