TROLLS ON YEOVIL

Posted on: Sun 21 Mar 2010

Manager Paul Trollope was delighted at the manner in which his team laid to rest their Yeovil jinx yesterday afternoon.

Rovers won a league match at Huish Park for the first time in five attempts, as first half goals from Jo Kuffour (2), and Paul Heffernan, sealed all three points.

There were no further goals after the break, but Rovers were always in control against a shell shocked home side.

"I was very pleased after the disappointment of coming away with nothing from the game at Exeter on Wednesday, especially after our second half performance," said Paul.

"We looked at Yeovil and thought they would try and attack us, and they did that, which left gaps to exploit. They always try to get a tempo at home and I think that's why they have had some good wins here. They can force you back, and they did for spells in the opening exchanges, but I was confident once we go the first goal."

That goal came about after Jo Kuffour closed down goalkeeper Alex McCarthy and his clearance rebounded off the striker and rolled into an unguarded net.

"It was a great bit of work ethic from Jo, who pressed well and got his just rewards for it.

"Once we got that goal I felt that they would have to come at us even more, and I thought then we could pick them off on counter attacks. We did that to devastating effect, and we might have had a couple more goals before the break."

Reflecting back on a week when his side could easily have won three games, and not just the one, Paul said;  "Football is strange in that there are times when you can control games, but that control doesn't always relate to the result. It's about being good at both ends of the pitch.

"We were comfortable in our recent games, against Tranmere and Exeter, when we controlled most of the play and should have won them both. But games come down to details in both boxes and when our front two are in the mood they were today, and with that work ethic, they are going to cause most teams problems.

"They worked hard as a pair, and when we get quality into them we feel that they can cause problems. They are getting a little bit closer at times, and trying to gamble off each other, and some of their link play was good today.

"It was a little bit little bit frustrating that we couldn't create one or two more things in the second half but I think it was a game we were in control of, though I thought that, at times, we were a little bit sloppy in possession in the second half.

"That said, the spirit was very good and the commitment of the players was excellent. We were desperate for a clean sheet and took our tally to four in five games, which is very pleasing."

Rovers now have a week to prepare for the visit of Southend to the Memorial Stadium.

"We are on the verge of creating a good home record. We are in the final few games now, and have had a few disappointments, but on the whole we have picked up some very good wins.

"Next week I want to see the Bristol Rovers that was out there today and we need a good, focused, week in training.

"It's a game that people will expect us to win, and we have to handles that expectation. We also have to be highly motivated, as we were today, not just to attack and pass the ball but also to deal with the ugly side of the game. We need to stop crosses, defend crosses, stick our foot in, and show a good discipline as we did today, particularly in the second half."
