SOMETHING TO BUILD ON - TROLLS

Posted on: Sat 02 May 2009

Paul Trollope was pleased to see his Bristol Rovers team finish on a high this afternoon.

The first team coach has been pleased with the player's commitement this season, and feels the side has plenty to build on for next season.

He told bristolrovers.co.uk: "It was pleasing to score four goals again at home.

"I think that makes 79, which is a good return for us, a fantastic return really, and it may be highlights a few deficiencies in other areas that could have meant a different story for the season.

"We will look to build on that next year, continue that side of it and improve other aspects.

"We said going into the game that it would be great to finish with a positive performance, and three points, to make sure we finish in the top half.

"I think we have deserved it as a group, the players and the staff have worked very, very hard this year. We have had some ups and downs, but t finish on that note is pleasing.

"If we had a game Tuesday night, there would still be aspects I am not happy with.

"I would have loved us to keep the ball better in the second half when we were 4-1 up, I think that is the time you have to really enjoy football, and do everything you can to really make it enjoyable, and I was just a wee bit frustrated that we didn't quite do that.

"But it was a hot day, and the job was done, so maybe you could understand a little bit of tiredness and laxity creeping in.

"But the commitment and the spirit the players have shown has been terrific all year, very rarely have we been convincingly beaten.

"Very rarely have I seen a lack of commitment or desire - I think I could count both of those on one hand, so that is something we can take forward.

"Finishing 11th is a decent progression for us, 10 more points than last year, and gives us something to build on for next season."

Rickie Lambert will share this season's Golden Boot for League One, something Trolls is very pleased about.

He said: "Rickie is the joint leading scorer in the division and he has had a fantastic year. I think he was our leading goal scorer last year as well.

"He has been impressive, the way he has led the line for us, and he has become pivotal in how we do things."

And Trollope had special praise for Charlie Reece, making his full debut for Bristol Rovers.

He said: "Charlie did well. He has shown up well in training, he trained very well in the group, and technically and physically he looked like he was getting near the level, and he can be very proud of his first start.

"Near the end he was running out of legs a little bit, but he had an early hand in a couple of goals, had some good bits of play and worked hard.

"He has done himself a lot of favours on that performance in terms of next season.

"He prefers the centre of midfield, but he has the energy and the quality to play on the outside as well. He is a thinker, and he appreciates other parts of the game, that not all youngsters do.

"We had a lot of people out of position, both the full backs really are not in their best positions, both the wide men are not really wide men, so it was a good effort all round.

"Charlie's involvement in the first half boosted his confidence and we were pleased with his full debut."

And the first team coach is pleased with the progression of the other youngsters.

He said: "We had a few of the youngsters on the bench today, and the plan was to feed them in.

"Alex Kite was unfortunate that it wasn't him today, but those players have all shown really good progress this year.

"We know the level we need now, even from the younger players, we have been in the division two years now, and some of them are shaping up nicely.

"There will be a training session on Tuesday, and the ones who are out of contract will be seen after that, and then the remaining ones will be training Thursday before they go off for their summer break."
