Bristol Rovers' new mascot will be called Captain Black Arab.

Rovers teamed up with the Evening Post to run a competition for fans to name the new Pirate in town.

After much deliberation the board of directors went for Captain Black Arab, suggested by David Bevan from Whitchurch.

Other names in the running included The Memorial Man, Captain Quarters and The Jolly Blue Pirate.

Rovers Chairman, Nick Higgs, said: "It was a difficult decision, as there were some good names put forward, as well as a few strange choices.

"A number of people made reference to Black Arab, but Captain Black Arab sounds more like a pirate.

"It also ties in well with our 125 year anniversary which is taking place this season. We hope the new mascot will allow fans to remember our proud history as well as looking forward to the future.

"We have recently launched a new Black Arab kit to help mark our anniversary and will be holding a host of celebrations later in the season."

Captain Black Arab is the cousin of Captain Gas, who is currently off on a swashbuckling adventure on the High Seas.

Mr Bevan, 57, from Whitchurch, wanted to pick a name that would eveoke Rovers' history. He said: "I was sat in the pub having lunch when I saw the competition and thought I would enter.

"I have supported Rovers all my life and been all over the country with them, so it was great to be chosen as the winner.

"There are a lot of famous Pirates, like Black Beard and Captain Jack Sparrow, and I thought that Captain Black Arab would tie in nicely with the club's history."

Mr Bevan will now enjoy a VIP day out at the game of his choice.
