Steve Elliott is hoping Rovers can at least take some defensive plus points from last night's Carling Cup exit at Watford.

The Pirates lost by a single goal to nil at Vicarage Road to exit the competition at the first hurdle.

It means Rovers have started the 2008/09 campaign with back-to-back losses, something Steve knows is hugely disappointing.

"We thought we had a chance to get a result last night," Steve told bristolrovers.co.uk, "They didn't have their strongest side out, and we felt we could give them a real game.

"It looks as though it was going to extra time, and then I'm not sure what happened with their goal, but they just threaded the ball through us and the lad put it away well.

"We were very disappointed in the dressing room after, because defensively we though we improved a lot from our display against Carlisle.

"But although we handled them well as a unit and as a back eight at times by restricting them to mostly shots from distance, we didn't do as much as we would have liked going forward.

"We huffed and puffed a lot, but we didn't create many clear-cut chances as such, and we definitely didn't test their goalkeeper enough.

"We've lost our first two games now and obviously we'd like to get our first win of the season as soon as possible.

"Brighton on Saturday will be a difficult match, but if we take our defensive form into that one then we're confident we can come away with a result.

"They're a strong team and difficult to play against, so it will be hard. But we want to get our first win of the season as soon as possible, and it would be nice if it came on Saturday."
