LAMBERT KEY TO OUR PROGRESS - TROLLS
Paul Trollope says next season's strikeforce could be shaped largely around Rickie Lambert.
The first team coach has hailed the contribution of the 19-goal marksman, who rounded off his 2007/08 campaign with a goal against Leyton Orient on Saturday.
Paul will now scour the transfer markets for potential partners for the former Rochdale man, as he endeavours to ensure Rovers are more of a threat going forward next season.
"Rickie scored a good goal on Saturday, and he was unlucky on a couple of other occasions," Paul told bristolrovers.co.uk, "I said to him at half-time I wanted him to go out and score his 20th of the season, but that didn't quite work out.
"We're happy with Rickie's contribution, but he's lacked any real support all season. One or two things haven't worked, one or two others haven't worked out, such as the loan signings getting injured, and that's why we've faded towards the end of the season.
"Rickie's got a year left on his contract, and he's a big asset for us. He was top scorer this season and scored some very important goals last season, and you always try to tie up your key players.
"He has led the line well, but he needs support if we want to take the team to where we want to go.
"We've got very good defenders and the back unit as a whole is good, we've got some decent midfielders and some young ones coming through, but we need to add quality and bits and pieces going forward if we are to improve.
"I'm very proud of the players in terms of their attitude and commitment over the season, but we need to make sure we progress over 2008/09 and the work towards ensuring that happens has already started."
