Joe Jacobson scored his first goal in Rovers colours this afternoon to earn the Pirates their first three points of the League One season.

The former Cardiff City man converted a Richard Walker cross after 38 minutes at Boundary Park, to help his side climb up to ninth place in the league table.

It was only Joe's second ever goal at professional level, and it's a moment he won't forget.

"I scored for Accrington when I was on loan there last season, but this was my first goal for Rovers and it's been a long time coming," Joe told bristolrovers.co.uk.

"I've been close before, but I'm really pleased to get it in an away game like this and for it to be the winner. It was a great team performance from us, and in many ways a vintage away display.

"Oldham were in the play-offs last season and this is a hard place to come. So to grind out a result against them and take the three points is something we're all very pleased with.

"We had to defend well in the first half when they put us under the cosh a bit, and in the second half there were a couple of lucky escapes too.

"But in our first two games we felt we could have won them both, so it was nice to win today. And if we had managed to be a bit more clinical in front of goal in those two other games maybe we could be even higher in the league now."

Although Joe was thrilled to score the winning goal, he said the moment will have meant more to the fans.

"Everyone is one unit at the moment," he said, "We all get on well in training and have a lot of fun, but we also get our heads down and work hard as today shows. The result meant so much to everyone, and I think that showed after the final whistle.

"We came here as a team and we wanted to get a result as a team. I'm pleased to have scored the goal, but I'm happier for the fans and for the club as a whole that we got the three points."

Next up for Rovers is West Ham United on Tuesday night, and Joe can't wait for the game to come around.

"They're the kind of games you want to play in," he said, "It will be a big test for us because they are an established Premier League side.

"But the pressure won't be on us, and you never know what can happen. Cup upsets happen in every round of every cup in every season, so if we perform well on the night then we'll have to see what we can do."
