GAS PRESS MK DONS

Posted on: Wed 07 Apr 2010

According to the Yeovil Express The Glovers' manager Terry Skiverton believes his below-par team "made it easy for Rovers to return home with three points."

Rovers waltzed into a 3-0 half-time lead at Huish Park and were "more than content to hang on to that advantage during the second period" said Skiverton which saw Yeovil do little to try and rectify the situation.

He added: "I think we let them score and that was the most disappointing thing, I don't think Rovers worked tremendously hard to get their goals. I think we were a little bit too easy."

The Express reported: "Alex McCarthy had a nightmare of an afternoon in goal for The Glovers. He was at fault for Rovers' first goal when he dilly-dallied with a clearance to allow Jo Kuffour to score in the fourth minute.

"And from then on, McCarthy looked under pressure and not at all at ease with anything."

Skiverton added:: "It was a tough day for Alex, but I've been saying over a course of months now that we're waiting for him to have one of those games and Saturday was that day.

"I thought he responded well in the second half. But these things happen and I stand by him 100 percent and I'll stand by any of my players when they make a mistake.

"I thought with the work rate, the determination and the effort that they put in, I can't question them on that.

"It was just that we were poor in the attacking third, and I thought we were poor in the defensive third. I thought that through the middle we were not too bad and we switched the play well. But everywhere else we were not quite at the races."

McCarthy, who like Mikkel Andersen is on loan from Championship-side Reading, has had a good season for Yeovil - but Saturday was just one of those very bad days at the office for the young keeper.

Paul Trollope was delighted with his side's 3-0 success at Huish Park- only the second time in ten League outings that the Gas have beaten the Glovers.

He told The Yeovil Express: "We went there knowing it would be a tough game, as they have had some good results at home and get a good tempo to their game.

"In the early stages you could see how they do get on top of teams, they played with a good intensity and the multi-ball system works well for them and they are able to gain a real urgency to their play.

Trollope added: "We had a few scary moments early on, but Jo Kuffour's hard working first goal gave us the initiative and I think if we get that first goal it goes a long way towards us winning because teams really have to come out at us then, and leave spaces to exploit.

"We produced the quality that may have been lacking in the previous two games.

"The little spell just before half time we got well on top and probably could have had another goal except for a couple of good saves from the goalkeeper (Alex McCarthy)."

Exeter City director of football and former Spurs star Steve Perryman told the Exeter Express and Echo how the Grecians' fans were the driving force behind their crucial 1-0 win over Rovers at St James's Park.

James Dunne was the hero as he headed home an 89th-minute clincher to bring City's nine-game run without a win to a grinding halt. "The fans were brilliant," Perryman said. "They drove us on and stayed with us throughout the game."

Meanwhile Paul Trollope told the Western Daily Press that he refused to concede defeat over his side's chances of making a late bid for the play-offs.

Trollope said: "We'll keep believing. Losing at Exeter has made it difficult now but we have to keep going. We know it is harder by the game and losing here has certainly not helped the cause. We'll keep pushing to try and find the performance that we feel the players are capable of.

"We pinned Exeter back for most of the second half although we didn't start at our usual pace," he added. "We were comfortable but never really extended ourselves until after the break and that is something we will have to address.

"We turned the screw in the second half and got in and around the box on a number of occasions but we couldn't find the final cross or shot to make the breakthrough.

"Exeter defended very well and blocked things but we have a lot of things to work on in the final third but when you are struggling at that end you need to keep it tight at the other.

"I was very disappointed to concede from a set-piece so late on. We have been doing well from them lately after having a bit of trouble early on in the season.

"We have worked really hard on defending corners and free-kicks so to lose that goal like that was a bitter pill to swallow."
