NEWSPAPER REVIEW
The headlines in the Hereford Times described Rovers as "rampaging pirates" after their convincing 3-0 victory at Edgar Street.
Normally it is the Bulls of Hereford who are rampaging but a Rickie Lambert hat-trick meant they were "battered" according to the Times as this defeat meant they slipped further into relegation danger.
The result completed a double for the Pirates who won the previous clash between the sides 6-1 at the Memorial Stadium back in August.
The Hereford Times reported that "If anything, that defeat, which came courtesy of a clutch of spectacular long-range shots, was less depressing than Tuesday evening's when the Bulls were out powered from start to finish and rarely looked like getting into the game.
"Hereford had to endure plenty of pressure in the opening exchanges and conceded three corners in the first seven minutes.
"Rovers' aggression brought three early chances for Jeff Hughes.
"The midfielder drove a shot straight at keeper Peter Gulacsi and then thumped another over.
"Hughes then forced a diving save from Gulacsi when he might have done better from an unmarked position.
"Gulacsi continued to show his class with an excellent block when Craig Disley got clear inside the area.
"But the on-loan 'keeper from Liverpool was beaten, however, on 26 minutes.
"Matt Done fouled former Bull Ryan Green on the edge of the area and Lambert drove his free-kick through the wall and into the net.
"Gulacsi saved twice more, from long-range efforts by Lambert and Aaron Lescott, before being beaten again on 34 minutes.
"The dangerous Lambert cut inside Godwin Antwi before sending a low shot flashing into the net for his 23rd goal of the season.
"Hereford, pressed back by the waves of Rovers' pressure, finally got in a meaningful shot on 37 minutes when Kris Taylor's 25-yarder was tipped over by keeper Steve Phillips.
"But, at the other end, Lambert drove just wide from David Pipe's cross and Disley headed in only to see the effort disallowed for pushing".
Hereford replaced two defenders at the interval in a bid to shore up the defence and they were unlucky not to reduce the arrears eight minutes into the second half.
Febian Brandy got clear on the right and delivered a cross which Done met on the volley from the edge of the area but the ball cannoned off the outside of a post and went behind.
The Times added: "As if to emphasise Hereford's ill-fortune, referee Roger East then gave Rovers a penalty for a foul on Green that only he appeared to see.
Lambert smashed the spot-kick past Gulacsi to complete his hat-trick on 58 minutes.
With the game won, Rovers predictably eased off but Hereford were rarely able to take advantage although Sam Gwynne saw a deflected shot saved. "
The win came on the back of our last home game against promotion-chasing Leeds United when substitute Jo Kuffour came on to grab a last-gasp equaliser.
United boss Simon Grayson told the Yorkshire Evening Post that their point against Rovers "felt like a defeat."
Grayson appeared to have steered his side to their first away win since mid-January at the Memorial Stadium thanks to Robert Snodgrass' fine free-kick just before the hour mark.
But United wasted several chances to kill off Paul Trollope's Rovers side and were made to pay the price when Jo Kuffour turned captain Richard Naylor to smash home a last-minute equaliser.
The Yorkshire Evening Post reported that "Rovers deservedly went ahead in the 14th minute. David Pipe was released down the right and got to the ball before Marques to deliver an excellent cross into the heart of the penalty area.
Jeff Hughes was arriving at full pelt and had a lot of work still to do but managed to steer a side-footed volley over Ankergren and into the top corner.
United rallied well though and an equaliser duly came in the 27th minute. Howson won the ball back with a tigerish tackle on Hughes and the ball was worked out to Snodgrass on the right wing.
The flight of the ball cut out goalkeeper Steve Phillips and allowed Luciano Becchio to head in from two yards in front of the United faithful.
Grayson's side were in the ascendancy now as they controlled possession but they were struggling to break down the stubborn Rovers backline.
However Snodgrass found the way through with a superb 58th-minute strike. Chris Lines clumsily felled Jermaine Beckford 25 yards from goal and the Scot curled a fine left-footed strike over the wall and into the top corner.
Grayson's side looked certain to pick up a vital three points in their quest to return to the Championship until Kuffour struck.
Naylor for once got too tight to the striker and Kuffour turned him with ease before lashing home a low volley from just inside the area".
After the match Leeds United captain Richard Naylor told the Yorkshire Evening Post that he called for the Whites "to bounce back from their last-gasp disappointment at Bristol Rovers."
Naylor said: "Our aim is to win every game. The gaffer has told us to go unbeaten until the end of the season and away from home we might have to settle for a point at times.
"It's still a point closer to where we want to be at the end of the season. After dropping two points we have to get two wins at home."
