A really long journey last Saturday proved to be very worthwhile as we returned home from Gateshead with all three points courtesy of Ellis Harrison's goal at the International Stadium.It was the second game in succession that Ellis had come off the bench to score the winning goal, his late effort having given us a2-1 win against Braintree Town just a few days earlier.
Both games saw us really dig in and work hard and whilst the football may not have been pretty, I'm sure you will agree that it's all about results at this stage of the season.
The latest two victories meant that we finished the month of February with five wins from all five matches played, a remarkable record and testament to the hard work put in by Darrell Clarke and his staff and, of course, the players.
I was delighted therefore, that Darrell was named as the Vanarama Conference Manager of the Month for the third time this season. It's an award that he thoroughly deserves and I will take great pleasure in presenting him with the trophy prior to kick off this afternoon.
I will be making two more presentations this afternoon, as we honour two more recipients of the Harry Bamford Trophy, Stuart Taylor and Steve Yates.
Both players were central defenders, who served our club with distinction, and one has returned and is now assisting with coaching the present squad.
Stuart is the club's record appearance holder, having turned out in a remarkable 546 league games. It's an amazing record, and one that is never likely to be beaten. Stuart is a regular at all of our home games and it will be a pleasure to present him with his award.
The afternoon's second recipient is Steve Yates, who made 197 league appearances for the club before going on to play in the Premiership with Queens Park Rangers. Steve, of course, is now our kitman and defensive coach, roles he tackles with the same enthusiasm that he showed as a player.
Tuesday night gave the Board the chance to talk to shareholders at the AGM, where we gave an update on the Club’s position both on and off the field. I thank all those who turned up for their support.
I can't end my notes without once again paying tribute to your support, both home and away. To take just under 700 supporters to Gateshead last Saturday was truly remarkable and I thank all who made the long trek up to the north east.
We have just nine games remaining and your backing will be vital in each and every one of those games. The players, especially, appreciate your support because it really does make a difference so more of the same today, please!
